So how do we design our chicken coop so that it’s an easy build, fits on our property (maybe a back yard) and comfortably accommodates our chickens? It can be a lot easier then you think. Here I’ll be presenting you with three chicken coop designs that can be build on a budget, will accommodate 3 to 25 chickens and made to fit even a small back yard.
By the end of this introduction you should know what kind of chicken coop will best serve your needs.
Design 1. The Portable Chicken Coop
Comfortably Holds: 3 chickens | Access to Sunlight: Yes | Space Occupied:
For the smaller backyards that are common to city suburb dwellers, the portable coop design is optimal. It can be built on a budget, moved on demand, and will hold three laying hens; producing 15 or more eggs a week!
This design has a section for nesting with easy access on both sides; just reach in and grab your eggs. Adjacent to the nesting area is an attached chicken run with the walls that can be removed during the day to let in a sun light and fresh air. The entrance door is conveniently place at the front so you have the option of easily removing the chickens.
The entire coop can be placed on caster wheels to increase mobility. This design is quickly cleaned with a spray down of a garden hose.
Design 2. The Midsized Free Ranger Chicken Coop
Comfortably Holds: 8 chickens | Access to Sunlight: Yes | Space Occupied:
For those of you with a large backyard or acreage, you want an esthetically pleasing, extremely effective and very accessible coop; this is the design you’re looking for.
It features a highly accessible nesting box that can house up to 8 laying hens; the nesting box roof hinges open for convenient egg gathering. The chicken run length in this design can be built shorter or longer according to your personal preferences, and is high enough to walk into and interact with the chickens inside.
The sturdy roof on the coop keeps your chickens sheltered and protected from weather elements, and predators that may want to fly in (halks) or climb in (raccoons). The strong chicken wire fencing used to enclose the run keeps land predators at bay, and provides your chickens with abundant sunlight.
Design 3. The Deluxe Coop with Free Range Pen
Comfortably Holds: 25 chickens |Access to Sunlight: Yes | Space Occupied:
Wow, this is the coop and pen setup for the serious backyard chicken entrepreneur. This bad boy features 18 compartmentalized nesting boxes with easy outside access. The coop has walk in access, a roosting area for you chickens to sleep and rest on, and a huge outdoor run that goes right around the coop.
With this design you can easily raise 25 chickens at a time with egg production at 125 eggs a week! At this point you would be selling your free-range organic chicken eggs; that’s way too many eggs to be consuming for one family.
